TRAVEL TIPS

Getting Around

Bermuda has a great public transport system, with buses covering the entire island. Buying a daily or weekly travel pass is perhaps the safest and cheapest way to do your sightseeing. They are valid for unlimited public transportation across all zones. Travel passes can be bought at Hamilton’s bus station or ferry terminal, and cost $12 for one day, $28 for three days, and $45 for seven days. The cost is $3 to $4.50 for single rides. Only exact change is accepted.

You can’t rent a car in Bermuda; only full-time residents are issued driving licenses. The island’s small size and the number of inhabitants do not leave a lot of space for extra vehicles on the road. You can, however, rent a scooter, the island’s most popular mode of transportation. Expect to pay about $75 a day or about $200 a week to rent a good-quality scooter. Having two wheels will give you the freedom to go wherever you please, but the roads are narrow and winding, and accidents are frequent.

You can phone for a taxi pickup anywhere on the island or flag one down on the street, but taxis can be pricey if you’re not with a large group. You’ll pay $6.40 for the first mile and $2 for each subsequent mile. Drivers will also expect a tip. A surcharge of $1 is added for every piece of luggage you put in the trunk, and a 25% surcharge is added after midnight and on Sundays and holidays.
